Monthly budgets at a glance
Türkiye is affordable compared to Western Europe, but costs differ a lot between Istanbul and smaller cities. These are realistic 2026 ranges for one exchange participant:
- Istanbul: highest rents and transport costs; expect the top of every range below.
- Ankara and Izmir: 15-25% cheaper than Istanbul overall.
- Smaller cities (Adana, Konya, Trabzon, Denizli): the most affordable — food and local transport cost roughly half of Istanbul.
Food
University canteens and local lokantas keep daily food costs low. Many volunteer projects include at least one meal — always check the project detail page before budgeting.
Transport
Every major city has a reloadable transport card with student discounts. Intercity buses are cheap and comfortable; domestic flights are worth comparing for long distances.
What projects usually cover
Accommodation is commonly provided. Food and local transport vary — the salary, accommodation and food fields on each opportunity listing tell you exactly what is included. If a field says "not specified", ask during your interview.
